After the excitement of the summer racing it will be down to the brave who don't mind chilly mornings on the Whanganui River as the first race of the 2014 Winter Series is held on Sunday.
There will be six races, held on the second Sunday of each month, fromnow till October, attracting anywhere from 15-30 boats and crews for each event.
The final race of the series is the annual Tonks Small Boat Race, named after the influential Tonks rowing family.
The Aramoho Wanganui Rowing Club and Union Boat Club take alternating turns as hosts of the races.
As there are many different classes and age groups of both rowers and waka competitors, the best overall on each day is decided by "prognostic time".
This involves taking the distance each class will race, then calculating the time they would be expected to reach if racing at international level.
Sunday's race is a 5km length event, starting at 9am on the 2km finishline alongside the AWRC clubrooms and finishing opposite of the National Library.
