A quarter of a century of burning rubber on an eighth-mile strip of city street will be marked on Sunday when the Wanganui Road Rodders hold the 25th annual street drags.
A special party of the day will be some demonstration runs by the Rivers family dragster, piloted by Adrian Rivers.
Atthe recent national championships at Meremere in the Waikato, the dragster set a national class record, covering the quarter-mile stretch in 7.2 seconds, reaching 300km/h before stopping the clock.
But an unfortunate start-line foul meant Rivers was eliminated in the quarter-finals.
Other club cars competing at Meremere included the Rivers/Rowan Pontiac funnycar, which qualified first in its division but was sidelined with engine problems.
Thirteen-year-old Dallas Rowan qualified well in the junior dragster field but a mechanical problem meant a second-round loss.
Last weekend Rivers won his class and recorded the fastest time for the quarter mile at a meeting in Masterton.
The Wanganui street drags, sponsored by Kiwispan, run on an eighth-mile stretch of Taupo Quay (near the Suzuki NZ building) and the programme features a variety of classes.
The programme starts at 9am and runs to 3pm.
