Repair of a washout on the East side of the Whanganui City Bridge that happened mid-2015 has proved to be complex, but work should begin soon, according to the New Zealand Transport Agency.
NZTA highway manager Ross I'Anson said detailed designs for the repair have been completed and construction is scheduled to begin at the end of March or the beginning of April, dependant on weather.
"We appreciate the ongoing patience of the Whanganui community while we worked to find the right design to repair this section of Anzac Parade," Mr I'Anson said.
The riverside walkway and edges of the road - which is part of SH4 - were damaged during the June floods in 2015 when a part of the footpath near the Anzac Pde-Portal St intersection collapsed.
Then, at the end of July, another section slumped, taking out the footpath from Taylor St to the City Bridge.
Mr I'Anson said the repair will include a retaining wall, made up of rock from the river bed up to 4.5 metres below the cycleway.
A concrete panel will be installed from the rock wall to cycleway and sheet piling will provide additional protection from erosion. The sheet piling will be installed below water level and won't be visible once completed.
Cost estimates for the repair range between $2million and $5million and will be met by NZTA.
