One of the Whanganui Science Forum's first speakers returns later this month, with a talk about metal-organic frameworks.

Professor Shane Telfer from Massey University will speak at the forum on November 28.

Metal-organic frameworks are a revolutionary new kind of porous solid, made by combining two types of building blocks - organic molecules and metal ions. They can be "tuned" at the molecular dimensions so can be targeted towards a raft of applications.

Professor Telfer will discuss work being done on metal-organic frameworks at Massey University, and consider questions such as whether they can be used to sequester carbon dioxide directly from the air.

Whanganui Science Forum's organisers Peter and Ella Grant said Professor Telfer was one of two speakers at the very first talk the Whanganui Science Forum was involved with, two years ago.

"This talk promises to wrap up the year with the feeling that it's not all bad news from the scientific community."

Final details of the talk are yet to be released.
