Police used road spikes to stop a car in Whanganui early on Sunday morning.

Whanganui police used road spikes to stop a fleeing driver in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Police said at about 1am a police patrol spotted a car weaving across lanes at Kaitoke. The patrol attepted to pull over the driver for unsafe driving but as officers approached the vehicle it fled.

Spikes were put in place and the vehicle was stopped at the Cobham Bridge.

The offender was apprehended at 1.10am.

A 19-year-old man will appear in Wanganui District Court on Tuesday, charged with driving while licence suspended or revoked, operating a motor vehicle recklessly and failing to stop.

Meanwhile police are looking for the driver of another vehicle that crashed into a power pole on Puriri Street about half an hour later. The driver fled the scene before emergency services arrived.

The Fire Service said one appliance was called to the incident about 1.40am.

Police said enquiries are continuing to identify the driver.
