Police are calling for two men involved in an assault last week to come forward as witnesses.

Senior Sergeant Andrew McDonald said a male was pushed to the ground and assaulted in the early hours of Saturday.

The alleged assault happened on Tanguru Street in Whanganui East.

He said there were "two unknown males" who may have witnessed or been involved in the assault, and one of them was carrying a guitar.

"We would like to make a plea for these people to contact the police as witnesses."

One person has been arrested in relation to the incident.

Tamehou Te Rangikaiamokura-Nahona appeared in the Whanganui District Court on Tuesday facing an assault charge.

His next appearance will be on December 22 in the registrar's list.
