Perry Newburn is on target as he nears Taihape on length on New Zealand run.

Perry Newburn is due to pass through the region this weekend as his attempt to break the record for running the length of New Zealand enters its second week.

The former Whanganui endurance runner set out from Cape Reinga last Saturday in a bid to reach Bluff in under 18 days and nine hours - the record set by Siggy Bauer in 1975 which has never been beaten.

Newburn began day 7 on Friday about 15km behind schedule but made it to Matamata - where the day was scheduled to start - early before setting off for Taupo.

"With a bit over 600km done already the body is starting to get into a rhythm," Newburn wrote on The last Hurrah - Length of NZ 2018 Facebook page.

"Looking forward to meeting some new people again today. Please feel free to join me at any stage."

Newburn is scheduled to make it from Taupo to Taihape on Saturday before running from Taihape to Foxton on Sunday.

Those wanting to run part of the way with Newburn can get in contact through the event Facebook page.

The 64-year-old, who recently moved to Napier, attempted to break the record for the 2113km run last year but was hampered by bad weather.
