It has only taken four months, but the 2017 Winter Series finally had a beautiful Sunday to go racing for the end of the programme with the Tonks Small Boats race at the weekend.
After the rain and wind of previous months, around 27 rowers in various craft and crewsizes lined up in sunshine for the 6km race, as well as three kayakers who were not eligible for the Dick Tonks trophy.
There were four visiting crews from the St Patrick's and St Mary's schools in Wellington. In the end, Aramoho Whanganui Rowing Club's Trevor Rush completed an excellent series as he re-teamed with Richard Brock to win the race on best prognostic time, finishing in 23m 25s, or 94.02 per cent of the record for the MGM2x class.
The Aramoho Whanganui Rowing Club's Tony Upchurch, Murray Stewart, Murray Carey, and Garth Hammond get into their stride.
Second place went to Phillipa Baker-Hogan with 91.22 per cent prognostic for Masters Women's rowing, while her fellow Union Boat clubmates in the Evans craft for MFMx2X were third (90.14 per cent).
Narrowly missing the podium was AWRC's Levi Carroll with 90.12 per cent in his Club Men's boat, while his club's composite crew of Niamh Monk, Zeah Brewer, Jaimee Bridger, and Ella Dudley rounded out the Top 5.
