A man accused of assaulting a woman with a knife and a baton and unlawfully detaining her has denied the charges.

Grant Butler appeared in the Whanganui District Court on Tuesday where he pleaded not guilty to three counts of assault with a blunt instrument, threatening to kill, robbery by assault, other kidnapping, injuring with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and disabling or stupefying.

Butler, 25, is alleged to have "wilfully and without lawful justification or excuse, rendered [the victim] unconscious" between April 1 and June 23.

He is also said to have assaulted her with a knife twice and a baton once.

Charging documents say he unlawfully detained the victim without her consent with the intention to "cause her to be confined".

They also state Butler robbed the victim of $120 on June 23.

The kidnapping charge carries a maximum prison sentence of 14 years.

Judge David Cameron remanded Butler to September 6 for a case review.
