Wanganui Archery Club's Jo Hollins with her gold medal from the NZ Archery National Championships last week.

There was great success for both the Wanganui and Marangai archery clubs at the 75th NZ Archery National Championships in Palmerston North last week.

The championships were held on the Massey University grounds from New Year's day through until Saturday, with the Wanganui club president Jo Hollins heading off a very experienced group to win the Outdoor Masters Women's Recurve title.

Hollins has been shooting for around eight years but only started competitive events 18 months ago, winning the NZ Indoor Master Women's Recurve and Matchplay titles earlier in 2017.

At Massey, Hollins also claimed silver in the Matchplay event, which was not her specialty, but the work she has put in during a short time has paid off.

Meanwhile, Marangai's Rob McMillan backed up from last year's Masters Men's Target title victory by winning it again in 2018 – which is his 29th national title in a long career.

McMillan also placed second in the Clout and third in the Matchplay.

Of the other four Marangai members at Massey, Sue Laugesen came runnerup to Hollins in the Masters Women's Target event.

Hanlie Bam had a great week after winning the Masters Woman's Compound target and the Women's Matchplay ahead of Hollins, while Bam was also second in the District Team event.

Gustav Bam was second in the Team Matchplay and third in the Masters Men's Target.

Kerry Ireland shot personal best scores in the Men's Target but did not place.

The Marangai archers had been training for some time for nationals, which paid off with their medals count.

They are now training up for the John Ireland Memorial shoot, being held on January 20-21st of this month.
