However, just because the distance is shorter, that doesn't mean there will be fewer challenges on the Tyrone farm property, Sport Wanganui promises.
"The 3km course will include much of the same obstacles as the longer distances, such as the vertical wall climb, muddy cargo net crawl, the mighty slip and slide and, of course, the rugged hills and terrain that the rural venue provides," the press release states.
"The challenging and fun course is designed for youth and adults, and provides a great opportunity for thrills, team bonding, confidence building, and mental and physical achievement."
Organisers this year are encouraging local organisations to enter as an opportunity for workplace team building.
Sport Wanganui will run a series of early-morning group training sessions for those keen to do some preparation before the big day.
During the Mud Muster, all participants will have their run time recorded via an electronic timing system and there will be prizes for the top three competitors in each age and distance category.
Transport to and from the venue and major drop-off points will be provided by Transit Coachlines and is included in the ticket price.
Limited access by private vehicle will be available, but a parking fee will apply.
More information about the event, including photos from 2013, can be found online at www.sportwanganui.co.nz or Sport Wanganui's Facebook page.
The Mud Muster will be on Saturday October 18 and is open to all adults and secondary school students aged Year 9 and over.
Registration will open on July 28 and can be lodged online at www.sportsground.co.nz/mudmuster
