Wanganui expat driver Matt Gibson was not able to catch the front-runners in the final round of the Toyota Finance TR86 championship at Hampton Downs at the weekend.

Finishing the season in fifth position overall, the Auckland-based Gibson had hoped to make the podium during the sixth and final round of four races on Saturday and Sunday.

Instead, he had to content himself with finishes of fifth, fifth, fourth and fifth.

Wellington's Jamie McNee fought to hold off Aucklanders Callum Quin and Ash Blewett in the race for the championship, while Christchurch's Tom Alexander also had a strong weekend with several Top 4 placings.

McNee came second in the third race on Sunday, which finished under the yellow flag after Auckland's John Lovich crashed out on the seventh lap, and that was enough to seal the inaugural championship.
