The wharekai (dining hall) on the Kaipo Marae in Waitotara, built just over a year ago, has slipped metres down the bank of the Waitotara River since Saturday night.
The hall was built at a cost of $700,000 and it had taken more than 20 years to get the funding.Marae spokeswoman Yvette McGregor said the deck area on the front had been slipping further down the bank.
"It's a major decision for us to consider now. We have to make up our minds very fast," she said.
The options included moving the building or just taking the deck off. Mrs McGregor said the community was very upset, because it was a new building in perfect condition.
"It has been so wonderful to have this hall at last."
