An elderly Whanganui man suffered multiple injuries when his car rolled on State Highway 4 near Horopito on Monday afternoon.

He was initially trapped in the car, which had left the road and ended upside down in a ditch.

The accident was attended by fire, police, ambulance and the Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter. The man was stabilised at the scene by a St John intensive care paramedic, then flown to Whanganui Hospital in a serious condition.

He was in a stable condition in the hospital's critical care unit on Tuesday morning, a hospital spokeswoman said.
