Man dies after being shot by police in Feilding

Feilding residents can expect to see more police officers on the ground today after police shot a man following an eight-hour standoff.

The man died after being taken to hospital last night.

Central District Commander Superintendent Scott Fraser said police officers will continue with a scene examination and provide reassurance to locals.

“This event would have no doubt concerned some residents but we would like to reassure people that this was an isolated incident.”

“Staff from out of district will be coming in to assist in the Critical Incident Investigation, as is routine when local staff are involved in such an event. The officers involved are being supported.”

Police were initially called to a house on Seddon St about 1pm yesterday after reports the man had shot through a neighbour’s window, Fraser said.

“When police arrived at the address, the man refused to come out of the house and speak to officers.

“Ongoing voice appeals were made throughout the day to encourage the man to come out of the house.”

The armed offenders squad (AOS) was deployed as a precautionary measure and the police negotiation team (PNT) also attended.

“At around 9pm, the man was shot by police after presenting a firearm at officers, and was critically injured.

“Medical assistance was immediately provided however, tragically, the man died after being transported to hospital.”

Fraser said their thoughts were with the man’s family and friends at this distressing time.

”This outcome is certainly something no Police officer wants when they turn up to a job.”

The IPCA will be notified of the incident.

Residents on social media described hearing shots fired on the street, but didn’t know if they came from the man or from armed police officers.
