Peter Irvine

Peter Irvine

On the occasion of the Quadrangular tournament, Wanganui Collegiate will honour one of their legends with the best seat in the house.

At 12pm on Monday, the school will unveil the Memorial Seat for the late Peter Irvine, the former student, teacher and coach who died in January, aged 82.

The Irvine family and the WCS Old Boys & Girls Association have organised the seat, which will look out on WCS No1 behind the goal posts, near a similar seat dedicated in 2010 to another legendary school coach in Jim Wallace.

Irvine attended Collegiate from 1945-49, becoming Prefect and making the First XV, then later representing Wanganui. He returned for three tenures teaching mathematics in 1958-77, 1981-90, and 1996. He coached the First XV and built up the rowing programme in the early 1960s, with the WCS eight winning the Maadi Cup back-to-back in 1963-64.

On Monday, members of Collegiate's 1st XVs from 1984-89 have been invited to attend.
