Large scale glass sculptures a winner

Christine Cathie is an Auckland glass artist whose work has been exhibited in Paris, New York and Denmark as well as Australia and New Zealand.

Her work can now be seen at the New Zealand Glassworks - Te Whare Tuhua o Te Ao (NZG) in Rutland St Whanganui.

The exhibition, titled Balance, is the first to be held at NZG since its opening last year.

NZG manager, Scott Redding said Cathie's large-scale sculptures were beautifully made and a great example for local students to see what can be achieved with glass.

"It's great to be exhibiting an artist of this calibre in Whanganui," he said.

"The pieces are very solid, and it takes a high level of skill to produce work like this."

Cathie has said that she named the exhibition Balance because her work explores the relationships between space and physical form.

"How the glass can look balanced yet looks precarious, fragile yet has strength, and weightless, yet with form and substance.

The exhibition can be viewed at New Zealand Glassworks, 2 Rutland St, 10am to 4.30pm daily until May 31.
