St Johns Hill Black emerged winners at the contributing schools hockey tournament in Wanganui on Tuesday.
Twelve teams from Wanganui city primary schools took part in the annual tournament at the Gonville Turf.
The tournament puts the teams into two pools with each team playing five games before the toptwo from each crossed over for the finals.
St Georges White and Carlton School topped group A while St Johns Hill Black and Mosston School emerged the best of Group B.
St Johns Hill Black took out the title in extra time after their final against St Georges White finished 1-all at fulltime. Nathan Cohen's runaway effort sealed the win.
Meanwhile, the play-off for third between Carlton and Mosston also finished in a draw and the teams still couldn't be separated after extra time.
Games ran for 20 minutes with six players on each side, a new concept for the annual tournament.
Tournament organiser Greg Elgar said the standard of hockey at primary school level had improved greatly in the past few years. "It was really quite good. It was really well supported and a lot of parents took time off work," he said.
