More than 100 Faith Academy School children received goodie bags and a set of skills to prepare them for next season's Wanganui primary grade hockey competition on Monday.
This year was the first time Faith City School offered a skills programme run by Hockey Wanganui, which resulted in five teamsbeing formed to play in the midweek primary school competition.
The festival day marked the end of the ActivePost Small Sticks season and gave the children a chance to test their new skills on artificial turf at Gonville Domain and the opportunity for Hockey Wanganui to thank the Faith Academy for taking part in the programme.
Hockey Wanganui development officer Michelle Low said while it was Faith Academy's first season playing in the primary grade, the ActivePost Small Sticks programme was in its third year for other city schools.
"It's designed to grow the sport and we go round all the participating schools running a festival day to say 'thank you'. We decided this year to give the goodie bags out to Faith Academy because it was their first year," Low said yesterday.
"We had about eight coaches on hand to help with skill sets with the kids on Monday and we played a few rounds of games and organised some other fun activities."
Festival days have still yet to be held for Wanganui East, and Wanganui Intermediate.
Carlton School's festival day has been scheduled for tomorrow.
