The Wanganui Under 18 girls team had the perfect start to their NZ Hockey tournament, beating Bay of Plenty 7-0 on a frosty Nelson morning yesterday.
After a slightly rough ride on the Cook Strait ferry on Sunday, the Haley Mallinder-coached Under 18s were still deadlocked 0-0 approaching halftime, beforeJessica Watkin scored off a penalty corner right before the break.
"Then it all started to fall into pieces in the second and we scored six goals," said manager Kellie Watkin.
Jessica Watkin would go on to score a hat trick, while Emma Rainey added a double.
The other goal scorers were Beth Norman and Hollie Brasting.
