A man was arrested on Monday afternoon following an incident in Marton in which a police car was rammed.

Christopher Muir, 35, was arrested in Marton is due to appear in the Whanganui District Court on Tuesday, on multiple charges.

Police had earlier appealed to the public for sightings of Muir, who was believed to be hitch hiking in the direction of Wellington. They said he was dangerous and should not be approached.

Police said Muir was involved in an incident in Marton where he "reversed a stolen vehicle into a police car before fleeing on foot".

The officer driving the police car was treated for bruising and whiplash at Whanganui Hospital.

Police said they would like to thank the public for their help in locating Mr Muir.
