A young Marton man narrowly avoided having his car tyres  spiked yesterday by police, instead deciding to  stop and give himself up.
Central police communications manager Kim Perks said the 19-year-old had passed an unmarked police car at speed in Tutaenui Rd,  a 60km/h zone near Marton, at about 1pm.
The officer
had turned on his car's lights and  siren
but the pursuit had quickly  reached speeds up to 160km/h.
The driver had sped down Tutaenui Rd into Jeffersons Line through Norwood Lane on to State Highway One where a marked patrol car had taken up the chase.
As the driver had sped  into Pukepapa Rd he  had given up, slowed and stopped by the Mount View cemetery.
He was charged with speeding and reckless driving and will appear in the Marton District Court next month.
