Five Nga Tawa students have new summer styles after a group haircut yesterday.

The "chop the mop" was a two-part fundraiser; the girls are seeking donations to go to the New Zealand Cancer Society while the cut hair lengths will be donated to the Pantene Beautiful Lengths programme to be made into wigs for women having cancer treatment.

Year 12 students Ella Medlicott, Becs Symes, Ally Munn, Amy Norris-Hibbert and Jordan Lawrence aim to raise $2500 and so far have $1200.

The hair was cut in the Marton school's hall yesterday afternoon.

Family and friends cut the hair initially while two hairdressers from Just Cuts tidied things up afterwards.

Ella Medlicott said there were mixed reactions to the initial haircuts.

"Ally cried. Becs was scared, but she didn't have the best haircut.

"I was really happy and proud - well we are all really proud and loved doing it.

"Our hair feels so good."

The chop the mop campaign will last a few more months as the students try to get closer to the $2400 target.
