Super star greyhound Bigtime Paddy will shortly commence duties as a stud dog.

He went from being a Group 1 winner two Friday's to an injury enforced retirement last Friday.

The outstanding career of the multiple Group 1 and high strike rate winner Bigtime Paddy came to an end at the Hatrick Raceway last Friday evening.

An incident on the first turn saw Bigtime Paddy abruptly pulling up with what was later revealed as a ruptured crucial ligament.

It was the 40th occasion that Paddy had exited from the Hatrick 520m traps and in the previous 39 occasions the 31.5kg greyhound had skilfully negotiated the first turn.

The Lisa Cole-mentored Bigtime Paddy enjoyed a brilliant 2017/18 racing season for his owners Cole and Craig Rendle.

He contested eight Group 1 finals, winning two of those, finishing runnerup in another two plus he had a third placed finish.

The champion had commenced the new racing season with his stylish victory in the Wanganui Cup at Group 1 level.

"Paddy was a once-in-a-life time greyhound," said Brendon Cole.

"He could do no wrong as we saw week in and week out.

"We were very fortunate to have a greyhound of his calibre in our kennels."

Bigtime Paddy concludes his stellar career after 81 races.

He won 44 of those, plus he was placed on a further 22 races. He won a tidy $220,233 in stake earnings.

His Friday evening Hatrick appearances will be sorely missed.

It certainly wasn't the best of weeks for the Cole operation as earlier in the same week they also lost the racing services of the outstanding sprinter Allegro Gun, when he tore a gracilis muscle at the Manawatu Raceway.

The current Hatrick 305m track record holder (17.07s) will also stand at stud.

Allegro Gun won 45 of his 105 races and he retires with career stake earnings of $120,875 his Whanganui owners Cyril and Robyn Evans.

This evening's main 520m event (Race 10) has a more open look to it where the consistent Friday performer Idol Tom can break through for a thoroughly deserved win for his trainer Marcie Flipp.

He has yet to win a Hatrick C5 520m event despite being Group 1 placed here on numerous occasions.

The Angela Turnwald-trained Arden Emgrand poses the biggest threat to Idol Tom from the three trap.

Treat the Cole prepared first reserve Bigtime Tears with total respect if she gains a race start here.
