Oamaru Club's Doug Morris putting during the Clubs NZ National Men's Pairs at Castlecliff Golf Club today.

The question of whether any pair could catch the dominant Hornby team was being decided on the final day of the 39th Clubs NZ Pen Hawkins Rosebowl National Men's tournament this afternoon.

Hosted at the Castlecliff Golf Club on behalf of the St Johns Club, as part of their 125th Jubilee, the pairs tournament attracted 204 players from chartered clubs from Northland to Invercargill.

Three rounds of stableford action started on Tuesday, with teams teeing off from 7am to 1pm on all three days.

Coming into today's final round, the Hornby 3 team had a 14 shot lead.

Best of the 19 local pairs was Castlecliff's Ken Read and Jeff Vigenser, who were third overall coming into this morning.

Read had landed the Whanganui region's first 'Hole in One' for 2019 during a club round on January 6, and just last week at a Twilight event, he got another ace.

However, as the ace was sunk on a smaller temporary hole, set up just for Twilight golf, there is an ongoing discussion about whether or not the 'Hole in One' will be recognised in the official club records.

In total, eight pairs from Castlecliff, eight from St Johns and three from Club Metro have entered the Clubs NZ tournament.
