Wanganui Girls' College is bringing back 80s fashion in their first school production in eight years.

The production, called Catwalk - The Fashion Musical, was written especially for secondary schools about two rival modelling agencies battling to be the best fashion house in town.

Production manager and drama teacher Renata
van Dam said about 50 cast, plus another 50 crew had been rehearsing, organising and planning for more than three-months to bring the witty, fast paced musical to Wanganui audiences.

Sunday was the cast's second-to-last chance to rehearse before hitting the stage on Wednesday.

"I don't know why we haven't had one in eight years, but another teacher Rosie James and I came up with the idea last year, and thought, well let's just do it."

The college has pulled out all the stops to turn the hall into a fashion house, complete with catwalk, extra lighting, music and costumes to match the 80s style.

Music teacher Rosie James said the girls had been getting increasingly excited as show-time advanced.

"When they put their costumes and makeup on, that's when it switched everything on for them. They've been asking since the first rehearsal, 'When can we put our costumes on?' so they were pretty excited yesterday when we had our first full dress rehearsal."

The show will not only be a first for the school, but also for its director Gretchen Nijsse.

"This is the first show directed by myself, which is awesome, but huge at the same time."

  • Shows run until Saturday October 17 starting 7pm. Runtime approximately two-hours in the college's hall. Tickets are on sale during business hours at the college. Ticket prices $5 individual, or $15 family (2 adult, 2 children)
