There was plenty of action in the Wanganui local leagues on Saturday over at Wembley Park, with a change in the lead in the women's league, and plenty of shock results in the men's grade.

The battle for the lead between the Wanganui City Women and the High School Girls 1st XI produced an intense fixture in the women's division.

Both teams were looking to prove themselves as the top team in the league, with the honours swinging in favour of High School Girls when they won 2-0.

In the other women's fixture of the day, Wanganui Girls College grabbed a hard earned 3 points over the Clive Barritt Builders Marist Women with a 2-0 victory.

The men's league saw some shock results, along with some big score lines, as teams jostle for position before the split occurs at the end of the first round.

The Wanganui Athletic Reserves put on a scoring master class, beating the struggling Castlecliff United 12-0 in the opening round, while Wanganui Collegiate fell 7-0 to the rampant Total Automotive Wanganui City Hammers, who are yet to be on the wrong side of the ledger this season.

Marist Celtic also went on a scoring spree against Wanganui High School Internationals, featuring a double hat trick from Max Carroll, although the young international squad were able to score a cheeky goal in return to finish the match at 13-1.

The derby between the St John Castlecliff 1sts and Castlecliff St Anthony's saw the Saints put another dent in the first team's plans for the season, treating them to a 4-0 loss.

With St John Castlecliff 1sts undergoing a development season, there shouldn't be too much disappointment over the loss, as they will surely be pleased their clubmates are well placed to challenge for the title this season, and could well bring the title back to the beachside suburbs in their stead.

The second round saw the Athletic Cosmos win 2-0 over the Castlecliff Braves, who will be disappointed that they missed an opportunity to push themselves clear of the cutoff point, as they now sit in 9th position.

The Marist Bhoys overcame a strong showing by the Marist Casuals in a match which had both teams locked at 2-2 at the halftime mark, but finished up 9-2.

In the surprise result of the weekend, the mighty Athletic Weekenders upset the Wanganui City Reserves, with a 2-0 win.

The Weekenders have been battling toward the top 8 for some time, but results haven't always gone their way.

This result for the Weekenders will renew their hope of pushing towards the top end of the table, while the City Reserves team, who themselves have been struggling to find their form after a successful few opening rounds, will be looking to bounce back if they are to put up a decent fight against their clubmates the Hammers this weekend.
