Fire fighters are battling a large fire in the bottom block on Victoria Ave in Whanganui.

The block has been cordoned off and the Whanganui Fire Brigade is asking people to stay away from the area.

The fire is in 1 Victoria Ave, known as Thain's Building.

"Our crews are currently trying to contain a large fire in the bottom block of Victoria Ave," the fire service said.

"Please stay away from this area while crews are fighting this fire. This is for your safety and ours too."
