A significant two-vehicle crash near Taihape, involving a car and a milk tanker, has left two people injured.

Emergency services received reports of the crash about 10.40am.

Hato Hone St John responded with two ambulances and took one patient in a moderate condition to Whanganui Hospital.

Another patient with minor injuries was assessed and treated at the scene.

The southbound lane of State Highway 1 at Spooners Hill Rd intersection is blocked, with drivers asked to follow directions from emergency services.

The road is obstructed due to the crash and an oil spill.

A diversion is in place through Spooners Hill Rd.

Fire and Emergency NZ Central shift manager Murray Dunbar said no extrication was required.

Two Fire and Emergency vehicles from Taihape and Waiōuru attended.

Road users are asked to avoid the area or expect delays when passing through.
