Fire crews battle Whangaehu house blaze, caution urged on SH3

A person with moderate injuries has been taken to hospital after a house fire in Whangaehu near Whanganui this morning.

A Fire and Emergency shift manager said they were called to the fire just before 6am.

She said the call came from an occupant inside the home and crews arrived to find the fire was “well-involved”.

Hato Hone St John responded with an ambulance and a rapid response vehicle and took one person to Whanganui Hospital. Two more people were assessed at the scene.

Four fire trucks and two tanker trucks are on the scene battling the blaze, which is now contained.

The shift manager warned the blaze was close to State Highway 3 and there was some smoke drifting over the highway.

She urged morning commuters to drive with caution.

Police said they assisted with traffic control and the roads surrounding the property were cleared before 10am.
