Turakina Maori Girls' College's board of trustees has appointed a facilitator as the school fights for survival.
Education Minister Hekia Parata announced this month the boarding school in Marton had until September 11 to complete a consultation process, and that closure of the 110-year-old school was on the cards.
The
board of trustees has appointed TeHuia Bill Hamilton as facilitator to work through the process with the school and the ministry.
Board chairwoman Trish Biddle-Amoroa said of two candidates Mr Hamilton was selected as the most suitable.
A former school principal, Mr Hamilton has been chairman of the Maori Education Trust Board, a Treaty settlement negotiator for Nga Rauru, a manager of the Human Rights Commission and an adviser on Maori education to the Department of Education in the 1980s.
