An alternative means of transport combining a cruise ride with speed is becoming increasingly popular in Whanganui.
Robin and Peter Willcox started selling electrical bikes one month ago through their business Rockgas Wanganui and have been reaping the rewards ever since.
Mr Willcox said electrical bikes, commonly known as e-bikes,have been around for the last ten years but seem to be very topical at the moment and for good reason.
"Cycling in general is on the upsurge in New Zealand...rail trails are becoming really popular around the Whanganui region.
"I think they are also a positive alternative for elderly people ready to hang up the keys," Mr Willcox said.
"We originally put aside three e-bikes for people to rent but ended up selling them all because they were so popular...we would like to have a renting service because it is a great way for tourists to see all Whanganui has to offer," Ms Willcox said.

The couples e-bikes business has been running as a division of Rockgas Wanganui on Putiki Drive. Murray Corps is the manager of both operations.
Designed in New Zealand and manufactured in China, the bikes can reach 32 km per hour with an eight hour battery life that can be charged over night.
"We rode to Castlecliff from Putiki the other day and still had plenty of battery left. I love the speed...and the thing about e-bikes is they take away the wind and the hills which is always good," said Mr Willcox.
