A driver reversed into another car while trying to escape a man kicking her door.

Hoani Pouwhare-Anderson drove to the Durie Hill carpark on November 14 and got out of his car.

The victim and her boyfriend were parked eating lunch, police prosecutor Sergeant Rachel Willemsen told the Whanganui District Court last week.

Pouwhare-Anderson went to the passenger side of the victim's car and told her boyfriend to get out. The boyfriend locked the car door, after which Pouwhare-Anderson kicked the vehicle, denting it.

Ms Willemsen said the victim reversed, trying to get away, but backed into another vehicle, causing "minor damage".

Pouwhare-Anderson pleaded guilty to wilful damage.

Defence lawyer Stephanie Burlace said Pouwhare-Anderson's emotions "get the better of him".

Judge David Cameron sentenced him to 40 hours' community work and reparation of $724.50.
