An evening of merriment, music and fine fayre is promised at Jigsaw Whanganui's medieval feast fundraising evening on September 16.

Executive officer Tim Metcalfe says a "king and queen" will host the evening, accompanied by players.

"There will be a five-course authentic medieval meal, prepared by three leading local chefs led by Gina Guigou of UCOL, and tickets include two free drinks," Mr Metcalfe said.

"We will have medieval dancing and entertainment and people will have the wonderful opportunity to use and purchase bespoke medieval drinking vessels made by international ceramicist Ivan Vostinar.

"A group of volunteers have put a huge amount of their own time, effort and materials into helping us organise the event which we really appreciate."

There will be an auction of a wide variety of items donated by local businesses. Other businesses have also come to the party with discounts and donations of food and materials.

"This is a good way for people to support a highly-valued and key local charity," Mr Metcalfe said.

"There will be lots of fun and good company without breaking the bank. We want it to be as families are when they're at their very best."

Supporting families is the reason Jigsaw Whanganui needs more funds. Last year their turnover was $1.4 million but government contracts totalled only $950,000. The difference has to be found through philanthropic organisations, private donors and fundraising activities.

"As we look to the future, we see the needs of families becoming more and more complex and the resourcing of work like this is becoming more and more challenging. In the last year we have engaged with about 700 families across Whanganui, Rangitikei and Ruapehu. That can be direct engagement through social work, through social workers in schools, our parenting programme and being available for crisis assistance for families."

Tickets to the medieval feast, limited to 200, cost $80 and are available from Jigsaw Whanganui at 236 Victoria Ave or online at www.jigsawwhanganui.org.nz. It is an 18 years and over event.
