It's been a deadly start to the school holidays with five people dead in road crashes in the last 24 hours and several others seriously injured.

One person has died after a crash south of Waiouru this morning on State Highway 1.

The single vehicle crash happened just before 5.45am about half a kilometre south of Springs Hill.

The road was expected to be down to one lane for a short time as the Serious Crash Unit begins its investigation.

A motorcyclist died early this morning trying to flee from the police in a chase in Auckland.

The driver refused to stop for police when the bike was seen travelling at speed about 1.15am in Mt Albert.

The motorcyclist failed to take the Royal Oak roundabout and fell off the bike, hitting a parked car.

Police are investigating and the Independent Police Conduct Authority has been advised.

Another man died after the vehicle he was travelling in flew off the road and hit a tree along State Highway 1 in Northland early this morning.

Police were called to the crash just after midnight at Towai.

The vehicle had left the road and hit a tree, police said.

There were two people in the vehicle and the driver was transported to Kawakawa Hospital. The second person died at the scene, police said.

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating and police offered their sympathies to the friends and families of the deceased man.

A fourth man died in Northland last night after a car plunged into a creek, trapping one of the occupants in the water.

Police were called to the Omanaia crash, west of Kaikohe, just before 10pm.

There were two people in the vehicle and while one person got out of the water with minor injuries, the second person was trapped in the water and died at the scene.

A Fire Service spokesman told Fairfax the van went off State Highway 12 and landed in a nearby creek.

"One person got out and went to a nearby house to raise the alarm and the second person was still in the vehicle and drowned."

Police said the person who went for help suffered only minor injuries.

The Serious Crash Unit is investigating.

Meanwhile, a fifth man died after the car he was driving hit a power pole in Taranaki yesterday afternoon.

The crash happened on Ketemarae Road, Hawera about 4.15pm.

The victim was the sole occupant of the vehicle and there were no other injuries, police said.

Diversions were in place while the road was closed and the accident scene cleared.

Three other people are in a serious condition after a two-car crash on SH2 between Tauranga and Waihi yesterday.

A fire communications spokesman said one person was trapped in a vehicle at Apata.

Emergency services were called to the scene just before 6pm and SH2 was closed.

Police said two people have been taken to hospital with serious injuries.

And this morning a woman crashed into a building in Onehunga, Auckland.

She managed to escape with minor injuries after colliding with the building on Onehunga Mall Road.

Police believe the wet conditions caused her to lose control of her car.

She has been taken to hospital as a precaution.

Meanwhile, a driver suffered minor injuries this morning when a car crashed into a barrier on Auckland's North Western motorway.

Tow trucks were on the way and the vehicle was blocking a lane near the Great North Road off-ramp.
