Whanganui High School has confirmed one of its students has Covid-19.

The Whanganui DHB announced earlier on Thursday there were five new cases in its area - four of which were in central Whanganui and related to an event in Manaia.

Via a letter to parents and an online statement on Thursday afternoon, Whanganui High School revealed there had been a confirmed case at the school this week.

The health and wellbeing of the children, staff and community was "a top priority," the statement said.

"The student was at school earlier this week for one full school day and a very short
period of another day."

The school would remain open, and it had appropriate public health measures and cleaning procedures in place, the statement said.

"Your child has not been identified as a contact and can still come to school."

Students and their families were instructed to watch for symptoms, and if any developed, they should get tested immediately.

"Then, stay at home until you receive the result.

"If your whanau hasn't been vaccinated, please do so as soon as possible. You can book on-line at bookmyvaccine.nz or by calling 0800 28 29 26. It's free."
