Whanganui District Council's waste minimisation adviser and Emergency Operations Controller, Stuart Hylton, said he knows people will be keen to recycle items they've held onto at home during the lockdown.

"We are anticipating heavy volumes, so please expect delays and be considerate towards staff and other users.

"Your co-operation with following the rules will mean we can keep staff and our community safe," Hylton said.

The Whanganui Resource Recovery Centre, at 81 Maria Place, will open for recycling and green waste drop-offs tomorrow but will still be closed for e-waste and scrap metal.

Only the front of the recycling centre will be open, with traffic management in place to help deal with the expected volume of cars.

Under level 3, the Whanganui Resource Recovery Centre will be open for these hours seven days a week:

· Between 9am-10am each day, the centre will be open only to citizens aged 65 years and older

· From 10am-4.30pm, the centre will be open to everyone
