Sport Stacking:National championships. at Whanganui Girls College gymnasium

Marton's Caleb Arthur is the fastest man with 12 cups in New Zealand after claiming the overall title at the 2017 National Sport Stacking Championships at Whanganui Girls' College on Saturday.

Arthur is among 14 stackers who have been offered the chance to go to next year's world championships in America - four of them from this region including three members of his family.

Another is Whanganui's Jasmine Anthony, 16, who finished inside the Top 10 in the world at the 2015 championships, and came runnerup in the Experienced Females grade of the nationals on Saturday.

Auckland's Sarina Wang was the female winner while Marton's Sophia Arthur, sister of Caleb and another New Zealand selectee, was third.

Anthony said she will not be attending the 2018 world event due to the personal costs of around $5000 per person.

However, the Whanganui Girls student was proud to see so many locals having a go at the sport, especially from her former St Mary's School where she took up sport stacking in 2009.

"A lot of those people are from Whanganui because there's a lot of novice entries, which is good," Anthony said.

"I'm helping them out a bit."

In total, over 60 competitors aged 5-76 years old took up the challenge on the day in individual and pairs competition.

Visiting entries came from Wellington, Tauranga, Murupara and Auckland, while there were 16 novice stackers.

Several records were broken provisionally, waiting for confirmation once the video footage and recorded times have been verified by the international governing body in the United States.

Competition was so fierce that a number of those records were set and then broken themselves only minutes later.
