Deaths probed
Police homicide investigations continue after the deaths of two men in separate incidents in Whanganui. James Butler was found dead at a Wikitoria Rd property on April 22. Daniel Gooch died on May 9 after being found with unexplained injuries on the road in Tinirau St on April 20.

Archives talks
There is a rare chance to hear from passionate Ratana historians and archivists Arahi and Puawai Hagger when they give a public talk "Ratana from the Archives" on Saturday, June 16. The talk will be from 2pm to 3pm at the Alexander Library - Te Rerenga Mai o Te Kāuru.

More climate action
Horizons Regional Council could be much more proactive about climate change, Whanganui councillor Nicola Patrick says. She'd prefer it to be taking the lead in reducing its own emissions and considering how aspects like agriculture should adapt, but didn't get much support from fellow councillors.

Hurst a finalist
Whanganui artist Lynn Hurst is one of 32 finalists in the 2018 National Contemporary Art Award. The award is managed by Waikato Museum Te Whare Taonga o Waikato and this year's 331 entries were judged by Reuben Friend, director of Pātaka Art Gallery and Museum in Wellington. The winner, runner-up and two merit awards will be announced on August 3.
