GRAND OPENING: The Peter Belliss-skipped Aramoho four were one of three teams from the River City to survive unbeaten on the opening day of the 110th TSB Taranaki Open men's fours tournament in New Plymouth on Monday. 100115WCLGBOWLS

Three of the seven Wanganui teams competing in the 110th TSB Taranaki Open men's fours bowls tournament in New Plymouth went through unbeaten on day one on Monday.

The Peter Bellis-skipped four from Aramoho that includes Phil Corney, Ian Broderson and Selwyn Prescott had two big wins (30-10 and 30-12) on Monday, while the Cary Pinker-skipped four from the Wanganui club also racked up two wins. The Pinker team includes brother Warwick, Lindsay Bourne and Gavin Scrivener.

The Wanganui East team, Roger Neilson, Peter Head, Laurie Smith and Gary Petersen were also undefeated.

Ray Park, who won the event in 2005, had a success in the morning and then went down 24-23 to a West End four skipped by Ross Henderson.

The Wanganui Bowling Club have entered four teams, Aramoho two and Wanganui East one.

It was also a top first day for Hinuera's defending champs, skipped by Stu Settle, with two wins. The second game was a tight 27-26 result over John Garrud (West End), who won the title in 2008 and 2009.

Northern's Philip Skoglund posted two wins, both narrow victories. The second came over Geoff Brown (Sunshine Coast) 22-19.

In the same tough section (six), Brue Phillips (Alton) and Dan Delany (Onehunga) won in the afternoon after morning losses. Other sides unbeaten on Monday included Rex Holmes (Paraparaumu Beach), Dean Elgar (West End), Brian Little (Palmerston North), Terry Lynch (Naenae), Peter Clark (Tauranga South) and Ross Henderson (West End).

The tournament ends on Sunday.
