Blake Hogan and Leo Hanna won the Under 16 Boys double scull national title in Twizel.

Blake Hogan and Leo Hanna won the Under 16 Boys double scull national title in Twizel.

The Wanganui Collegiate rowers brought home five medals from the 2018 Aon Maadi Cup and NZ Secondary School Rowing Championship regatta on Twizel's Lake Ruataniwha last week.

The leading hope for a now-rare gold medal was the school's Under 16 Boys double scull crew, and stroke Blake Hogan with bow Leo Hanna did not disappoint.

They won the only Whanganui gold medal with a 7m 4.74s time in the A Final, just over a second ahead of the runnerup Josh McGlashan crew, with the Otago Boys High crew back in third.

It was a proud moment for coaches Tyler Scott and Zeal Hanna.

Collegiate also won silver in the Under 18 Boys double sculls through Jonte Wright (stroke) and Loftus Stanford, who finished the A Final in 7m 0.91s, three seconds behind the winning St Kentigern crew, with St Thomas of Canterbury school in third.

There were three bronze medals for the squad.

Hogan would follow his double scull gold with bronze in the Under 16 Boys single scull, in a race dominated by Takapuna Grammar School's Evan Williams, with St Johns College's Finn Hamill in second.

Wright was also a double medallist as he added a bronze in the Under 18 Boys single sculls, following Roncalli College's winner Jack Gibbs and Lindisfarne College's runnerup Fergus Ritchie.

Jamie Harris (stroke), Catherine Pearce, Laura Francis, Maddie McLean and cox Georgina Duncan chased St Peter's School and Rangi Ruru Girls School home in the Under 18 Girls coxed four A Final, which was an improvement on the North Island championships.

Of the Whanganui High School squad attending the championships, they made four A Finals at Lake Ruataniwha, with the Under 17 Girls coxed quad sculls coming the closest to a medal in fourth.
