Are you part of the big picture?
Registrations are already filling up for people to participate in "The Big Paint", one of the main attractions of the Real Whanganui Festival.
A hundred people will paint individual canvases, which will together form a giant 7.5m by 5m artwork display.
Project leader Felicity Priest said:
"As far as I know, it's the first of its kind in New Zealand."
While she wanted to keep an element of intrigue, she did reveal the artwork would be an "iconic" image of Whanganui.
Registration is at the i-Site for anyone over 16 and is free.
The creative project will take place on September 17 on the War Memorial Hall forecourt.
A giant easel will allow dozens of people to paint at one time and the completed design will be unveiled in the afternoon, gracing the front wall of the memorial hall.
Ms Priest, who moved from England to Whanganui in 2006, said the idea came from a similar giant-sized project in Trafalgar Square in London.
"I thought it would be a great idea for Whanganui and it's a great way to get people together. Wanganui is a very artistic place," Ms Priest said.
There will be plenty of festivities to keep families entertained, including live music, food and coffee stalls and activities for the children.
Every participant will also go into the draw to win $100 worth of art materials, courtesy of Sienna Art Shop.
Visitor Centre administrator Carol Rickards said registrations had been "going steady".
