As an opportunist I couldn't help but use the latest explosive news of Trump's appointment to explore my own thoughts about it.
Surprisingly to me, my initial response of his landslide win wasn't one of gloom and doom. Whilst others were freaking out, I was quietly trying to understand why my
reaction wasn't one of fear like most others. I was more curious, and curiosity to me always comes with a feeling of excitement. The risk of NOT knowing what's going to happen next is often more exhilarating to me! Weird, I know. What it got me thinking about was what did I see in Trump that wasn't just offensive and destructive? And what I discovered is that there is a part of me that respects him for being a man who stands confident and strong in his own beliefs. I am always inspired by that.
Like him or loathe him, Trump is about as good as it gets as an example of someone who is a product of their own convictions. Arnie Schwarzenegger was another. A little bit of history about Arnie is appropriate here. After arriving in the US, Arnie won a bodybuilding tournament and he was interviewed about what he was going to do with his large winnings. The interviewer assumed he might in fact open a gym ... Arnie's response? "You don't know the meaning of ambition. I'm not going to run a gym, I'm going to be a movie star and I'm going to be the president of America."
We all know what happened next! Whilst he didn't make it to the presidency, he did make it to governor. What we are talking about here is not just ideology or dreams of achieving a goal, but a deep inner conviction of absolutes. That no matter what happens, somehow goals - not CAN be, but WILL be achieved. Muhammad Ali was another example: "To be a champion you must BELIEVE you are the best."
Now might be a good reminder of a little bit of the science behind our thoughts and beliefs. Our brain does not know the difference between what is real and what is not. Or in other words, an imagined perception is the same as a real perception. Stop and think about that! We need to understand that whatever we believe in is true and we are right. And the deeper the belief, the truer it is.
As a life coach I work one to one with people to make sure that we create the sort of beliefs that work for us instead of against us. The power of our beliefs exceeds and transforms all, and we all have the potential to do this. We are ALL power houses! The only difference between us is what we do with our goals, values and passions which ultimately fall out of our deeper beliefs. We all live by our beliefs, and despite it feeling like it, they are not set in concrete. We have the ability to create new ones, and if given enough attention they too will dominate our thinking. This isn't exclusive information that only happens to others, and PLEEAASE don't use the "but I need ... first", because you will be waiting a long time until you believe that you actually have the power to do something about it NOW! This power exists in all of us and we can transform our lives once we learn how to create new beliefs. If we believe in something enough it can happen and Trump should always remind us of that. Unfortunately in my experience we Kiwis are really good at taking humility too far. To stand out or to have confidence is often seen as arrogant - I see it as strength and courage. Somewhere we have been led to believe that we are victims of our circumstances - well it's been a lie! Our confidence has been rocked with powerful messages that to have confidence in oneself and belief in oneself is a negative thing!
Stuff blending in, it's time to stand out, and whether I agree with Trump's policies or not, I admire that he has got to where he's got, through sheer commitment and belief in himself, which always comes with risks. At least he's had the guts to give things a go! I am inspired by that attribute and others like him. Arnie, Trump, Muhammad Ali are all people I'm going to use as reminders that ANYTHING is possible if you believe in it enough. As for Trump's effect on the world, I'm not powerless to respond to what happens as a result. I'm not a victim. If I felt powerless then I guess I'd be pretty scared right now, but I'm not. Change and adjustment is part of life. It's time to wake up. Only growth, learning and smarter thinking can come from changes which are put upon us - if we want it. We all have a choice to just keep mindlessly responding to what happens to us, or we can create our own set of powerful beliefs to live the sort of life that we want. No one, not even Trump has enough power to take away our own powers of choice.
