Two builders and a stonemason won't be missing out on the Super 14 while they do a spot of fishing.
Shayne Gilbertson, Shaun Brill and Rob Henderson from the Kapiti Island Fishing Club have set up camp Kiwi-style on South Beach just above the high tide mark.
Complete with a Sky dish
to catch all the rugby action, they're hoping for some biting action at the end of their lines in the Wanganui East Adjunct kahawai fishing competition today, and angling for the winning snapper in the Eides Sports $40,000 Surf Fishing Contest tomorrow.
The men arrived at South Beach on Thursday, but the onshore wind was too keen.
A blue tarpaulin covered their work-vans-turned-sleeping-accommodation, and there was plenty of room for visitors to enjoy a spot of hospitality.
Late yesterday, Eides Sports co-owner Grant Clark said they had received 749 entries for tomorrow's competition.
"We've still got Saturday and Sunday morning for late registrations, but there's only room for 800 anglers on the beach," he said yesterday.
Mr Clark said the $40,000 Eides competition has the largest prize pool since the cessation of the Ninety Mile Beach competition last year. The weather was looking good and anglers' camps were already dotted along South Beach as far as the Whangaehu River.
