The Age Concern Expo at the Wanganui Racecourse on Friday. 011113WCSMEXPO1

The expo for the elderly at the Wanganui Racecourse was a great success with 80 exhibitors taking part and lots of questions to be answered.

Funeral directors Julie Kenny and Fleur McNabb said the informal setting of the Age Concern expo gave people the opportunity to approach them.

"A lot of people would not usually walk into our office to ask the questions. The question most asked was - are the casket handles burned?"

Yes, the casket handles are plastic and are incinerated in the cremation.

Two Wanganui Collegiate students, Varn Hiko and Ben Johnson, were there to assist. A reticent Peter Jamieson, shown how to play Wii, succeeded in making a 10-pin bowling strike.

Exhibitors showed mobility scooters and medical alarms; rest homes, the ostomy group, diabetes, Bupa, information about medication and the Hearing Association were on hand to impart their knowledge about their organisations.
