A celebration of the good ol' gummies

The weather held for Taihape's Gumboot Day on Saturday, although attendance numbers were lower than usual.

Organiser Elizabeth Mortland said there was a "noticeable" difference in numbers of people, but the day was still a success.

It was the 30th annual celebration of Gumboot Bay and the event was marked with a cake cutting.

"We were so lucky with the weather," Ms Mortland said. "We had lots of fun activities such as sack racing, hay-bale stacking, egg throwing and catching - which was really, really fun - and, of course, gumboot throwing."

Those participating in the egg-throwing competition had to throw a raw egg back and forth without breaking it, and some managed to throw the egg about 40m without it smashing.

The winners of the gumboot toss were Brent Newdick, from Auckland, and Taihape local Janey Harrison. Mr Newdick is also the 2015 New Zealand gumboot-throwing champion.

"We had live music throughout the day with local performing artists, including the singing cowboy who busks during the day."

Ms Mortland, who started organising Gumboot Day in 2009, said she liked seeing people have a go. "The little kids, they were gorgeous."
