Kyle Butters' nerves about his first tournament of the year proved unfounded as despite going in cold he won the Open men's singles and doubles titles at the Dunlop Slazenger Wanganui Open.
Having virtually no time on court before last week, Butters beat Wanganui's Patrice Mathey in the singles final 6-0 6-2 on Sunday. Butters then teamed with Craig Davey to win the doubles crown, beating Mathey and Sean Edmonds 6-2 6-3 in the playoff match.
Wanganui development officer Wilton Atkins said Butters had been nervous because Mathey had beaten him in a few practice sets last week in the tournament buildup, but any worries about rust were shaken off for two fairly comprehensive wins.
In another success for locals, Wanganui's Zachary Farmer teamed with Palmerston North's Daniel van der Spuy to win the 10-year boys' doubles title, beating Taranaki brothers Oscar and Maui Wano in the final 5-3 4-1.
Basia Sosnowska and Aleesha Duxfield were not so fortunate in the 10-year girls' doubles, losing to Taranaki's Mikayla Barnard and Wellington's Ella Craig.
