The tiny settlement of Parikino will come alive tomorrow with the sound of horses, dogs and wood-chopping.
It's the Parikino Sports Club's annual sports meet, which has been held on the Shaw family property on the Whanganui River Road for the past 88 years.
The event is a traditional rural
sports met, with competitions such as pony, hack, shepherding, dog trials, and wood-chopping. There are also fun events for kids, including sack races and apple bobbing.
Most competitors are from the area but some do come from as far away as Marton for the meet.
There are specific events for locals. With "locals" defined as people living in an area bounded by the Whanganui River to the west, Pauls Road in the south, Pipiriki to the north, and State Highway 4 as far as the Matahiwi Track.
