Wanganui can celebrate seeing in the New Year in fine weather but it's not going to last.
MetService says the sub-tropical weather system that brought torrential, thundery downpours to a number of places over the past two days will ease today, allowing drier and more settled weather to return for the last day of the year.
Daniel Corbett, MetService communications meteorologist, said New Year's Eve should be a lot drier across much of the country.
A weak ridge of high pressure would build across the country from the northwest and hang on in many places on New Year's Eve, bringing mostly dry conditions, he said.
But a new front threatens to bring some wet weather across many parts of the country for the first day of 2014.
