As Waikato celebrates 80 years of badminton next month, Waikato Badminton's oldest member helps inspire the youngest member of the club.

Waikato Badminton Association's patron, Pat Dallenger, 84, can be found hitting shuttles with Isabella Weistra, 2, at the courts.

"It is good to keep in touch with the young people involved in the sport, it keeps me young," Pat said.

Pat has seen many changes in the game and the facilities since she started playing in 1944.

"The standard of badminton has improved since I started. It 's a much faster game now."

A celebration will be held for the 80th Birthday of the club on Saturday, August 11.

Pat said she is really excited about the event.

"The fact that we have got to the 80-year mark is a great achievement."

Men's world singles badminton champ 2011, coach and valued member, T.J. Weistra, who came to the Waikato in 2004, says his daughter Isabella, 2, has no choice but to spend many days and hours in badminton stadiums around New Zealand.

"Both her mum and dad love the game and will probably keep playing for as long as they can."

"Isabella loves hitting shuttles and also balloons, at home, which has been great for her eye-hand co-ordination."

The event will be held upstairs at the Waikato Badminton headquarters, Dey St, in conjunction with the finals of the Slazenger Cup and the Wisden Cup.

"The 80th birthday organising committee is looking forward to welcoming past and present players for a chat and to view the display of memorabilia."

Members and past members are encouraged to be part of the birthday. Register by July 23.
